Iyengar Yoga

The most popular style of Hatha yoga in the United States today, Iyengar yoga focuses on classic positions that are done with precision and proper alignment. It is not unusual to hold poses for one minute or more to gain a deep awareness of performing the asanas (poses) exactly as they are meant to be performed. Props, such as belts, ropes, blocks, bolsters and beanbags, are also used. This allows people of all body types and fitness levels to access all that yoga has to offer.

Iyengar instructors undergo two to five years of training to be able to assist students in performing the poses correctly. The Iyengar philosophy holds that with consistent practice, everyone can learn to do the postures perfectly. The use of props helps to achieve correct alignment, even when the body is not open enough to complete an asana without a prop.

Reach Self-Actualization with Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga helps you achieve a healthy body, clear mind, and pure emotions. It's not an aerobic form of yoga, as it uses very little vinyasa (flow between poses). Holding the asanas does build strength and flexibility, however, and it can be strenuous.

Here at YogaWorks studios, you'll have access to a wealth of Iyengar-style classes taught by certified instructors.
